Pernel , Whitaker, one of the best, light boxers, in history, died on Sunday, after being hit, by a car, in Virginia, as police reported.
He was, 55 years old.
Officers, received, a call, around 10 pm, Virginia Beach police, said, in a press, release, about an incident, involving, a car, and a pedestrian.
The infantry, who died, on the scene, was later, identified, as, Whitaker.
The driver has remained, in place, with the police, and the investigation, is still ongoing, the statement said.
"We lost one of the best sterling boxing heroes, my father Pernell Whitaker'. his son Dominique Whitaker, said in a Facebook post.
Whitaker, known for his defense skills, grew up in Norfolk.
As an amateur boxer, his record is 201-14, with 91 KO.
He won, the Olympic gold medal, at the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles, and won the gold medal, at the 1982 Pan American Silver Games, then silver at the 1982 World Championships.
Whitaker, became pro, in 1984, after the Olympics, and continued, to be world champion, in four weight classes: lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight, and light middleweight.
During his professional career, he has won 40 victories (including 17 playoffs), four defeats, and one loss.
hes has been ranked, in 1989, as the best fighter, in the last 80 years.
Whitaker retired, from the fighting in 2001, and worked as a coach. He was recruited, to the International Boxing Hall of Fame, in 2007.
